Telegram handles video differently depending on where the video is: a direct message, a group, or a public channel. Some methods are built into the app; others require a third-party tool. This guide covers all three scenarios.
Method 1: Telegram’s Built-In Download (DMs and Groups)
On mobile (iOS and Android)
Tap and hold the video in any message → Save to Downloads or Save to Gallery.
On Telegram Desktop (Windows/Mac)
Click the three-dot menu (⋮) on the message → Download. Or right-click the video → Save video as.
Method 2: AllMediaTools Downloader (Public Channels)
- Open the public Telegram channel in a browser (t.me/channelname) and copy the post URL.
- Open AllMediaTools Telegram Downloader.
- Paste the URL and click Download.
Method 3: Auto-Download in Telegram Desktop
Configure Telegram Desktop to save videos automatically: Settings → Privacy and Security → Data and Storage → Automatic Media Download. Set your preference by connection type (Wi-Fi vs. mobile data).
Where Are Downloaded Files Saved?

|---|---|
| Android | Internal Storage/Telegram/Telegram Video |
| iPhone | Camera Roll (if you tap Save to Photos) or Files → Telegram |
| Windows | %AppData%\Telegram Desktop\tdata |
| Mac | ~/Library/Group Containers/…/Telegram |
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I download from private Telegram channels?
Only if you’re a member. Use the built-in download from within the app. Third-party tools cannot access private channels without your authentication.
Can I extract just the audio from a Telegram video?
Yes. Download the video first, then use AllMediaTools MP4 to MP3 to extract the audio as an MP3 file.
The downloaded file won’t play — what do I do?
Convert it to a standard MP4 using AllMediaTools Video Converter. Some Telegram files use codec settings that only certain players handle.
